Temat tegorocznego Pleneru / This year's theme

New species or evolution

I would like to offer the following development of this year’s theme:

If we look at the entire history of humankind, it is possible to distinguish four epochs according to the nature of conversation people have been able to have.

At the beginning, in the earliest times, people did not know writing or symbols. When conversing, information that was passed to another person had to be transitioned “physically”, i.e. in the same place and time. Interlocutors would interact with their bodies, smell, gesture, eyes, sound, and they would thus create an atmosphere of “physical conversation”.

The second epoch was marked by the invention of symbols and writing, which allowed people to pass on knowledge.

We live in an era of post-writing culture, this period has produced everything we have surrounded ourselves with, including mathematics, physics, etc. The reason is that all fields of knowledge and study required paper and writing in order to be recorded for future reference. Writing opened up the possibility to create channels for transmitting knowledge, yet at the time to create means of destructing culture and burning books; it was lost knowledge, as it could not be remembered or recreated. Nevertheless, it brought humanity to where we are now. A world in which two people do not have to meet face to face in one place in order to communicate new information.

The third era began with technological inventions which allowed to capture emotions and reproduce them in different places and time, namely photography, film, radio broadcasts, etc. Emotions were possible to record for recipients to view later. People started to experience other people’s emotions not in reality, they had occurred and had been captured in different place and time. Therefore, people living in one social reality were suddenly faced with emotions coming from a completely different reality and had to relate to them somehow based on the cultural experiences they had at their disposal. Try to imagine a person living in a reality where emotions were only brought about by other people. Now think what kind of feelings and emotions must have arisen in that person when presented a photography showing the world on the other side of the globe.

Currently we’re going through an era of rapid information distribution, those significant and insignificant ones. We can dive into media-fed news about events from all corners of the world, and at the same time check what is new in our favourite celebrity’s life in a matter of seconds.

People are losing the need for reading and writing, a conversation with another person does not require immediate contact anymore, there is no physical meeting when passing knowledge onto someone else, nor when experiencing any emotion. Emotions can be switched on using entertainment- and emotions-serving devices. And what gets recorded is available everywhere and forever. Is it not the case that humanity is now being programmed for certain behaviours? At the moment, it is social media that are creating programmes, lifestyle is something that is done through social networking sites and other mega corporations. And what is art nowadays? It has become a kind of occupation for generating money and not conveying beauty or providing space for emotions. Was art deprived of its functions? Or maybe we have become a different species of Homo Sapiens which picks up and experiences emotions in new, different ways?
